English Bulldogs - Breeders - Introduction and History
English Bulldogs originated from early Mastiff-type war-dogs of ancient Britons. These early Bulldogs, known as butcher dogs, uses were in bull baiting contests and dogfights. These scenes were popular among people of all classes. The idea of bull baiting appeared in 1206 AD, when the Earl of Stamford had a chance to contemplate a butcher's dog chasing a bull on a meadow near his castle. The scene so impressed the Earl that he decided to provide the lawn to local butchers in return for annual bull-baiting shows, and that was the beginning of the tradition.
The core of the whole thing lay in setting a dog or a group of dogs on a tethered bull, bear or lion. The dog had a way of grasping the animal by the nose and bringing it down to the ground. The dogs, powerful mandibles clenched in a suffocating death grip.
Bulldogs featured brawny bodies, thick skin and massive rectangular heads, which provided protection against blows. A group of Bulldogs was fit to turn a large animal into a bloody mess however, it was not uncommon for dogs to be killed in contests, also.
Prohibition of bull baiting in 1835 started the decline of the breed. There was even a threat of extinction. However, several devoted bulldog-lovers exerted efforts to reinitialize the breed and formed the pioneer Bulldog Club in 1864. In order to make the dog less vicious and more amiable, breeders introduced the Chinese Pug into the genetic pool. Thus was born a new species currently known as the English Bulldog.
Modern Bulldogs are smaller in size than their early beastly predecessors, and they are a lot more easy-going and affable. They are no longer considered to be butcher dogs, and even have the reputation of toy-dogs. English Bulldogs feature a rather threatening appearance, actually belying their kind nature and funny manners.
