English Bulldogs - Breeders - Breed Description

English Bulldogs are not large in body, but they have robust and square bodies, muscular legs and wrinkly muzzles, massive heads and turned-up jaws. Jaws are strongly developed and muscular, defined by the dog's early historical function. Front paws are set wider apart than the hind paws, which provides for remarkably strong and solid standing, and it is a vital aspect for its fighting ability.

Height: males - 12-15 inches, females - 12-15 inches;
Weight: males - 50 pounds, females - 40 pounds;
Life expectancy: 8-10 years.

The circumference of the head equals the dog's height at the shoulder. The up-front view of the muzzle reveals a specific rectangular structure of the skull. The profile view shows straight muzzle, running at an angle of about 45 degrees to the horizontal, the line of the closed jaws being perpendicular to that of the muzzle. This balanced structure of the head provides for the firmness of the dog's undershot bite, with no impedance of nasal breathing. The ears are rose-shaped, not erect. Eyes are rounded and placed widely apart.

English Bulldogs have wrinkled skin on their necks. Bones are thick and the ribcage is barrel-shaped. Front paws are muscular, short and straight. The underline is well defined, and tucked-up. The back curves proportionately, neither excessively straight, nor swayed. The tail carries down. Coat is short smooth and glossy, and it can feature different color variations.

Despite a somewhat aggressive appearance, English Bulldogs are funny and loving companions. They have a remarkable sense of humor and are very good with children, relatively friendly with strangers, guests and other pets. However, they are often wary towards other dogs. Sometimes English Bulldogs exhibit stubbornness.
